Anaheim peppers are an heirloom from southern California and have been around since the early 1900s. The pendant, dark green fruits have thick walls that are excellent for roasting or smoking, and will mature to dark red if left on the plant to continue ripening. The Anaheim pepper is mildly hot, much less hot than a Jalapeno at 100-500 SHUs. Expect six inch long green peppers from vigorous, upright, bushy plants that grow up to two feet tall. Anaheim makes a good, very mild substitute for Ancho in chile relleno recipes.
